Abstract
In this thesis, the effect of free improvisation therapy on mentally retarded children is studied to improve their hyperactivity and communication skill. This study aims to reduce the hyperactivity commonly found from those children and lead them to express their feelings or ideas non-verbally by music therapy activity. The music therapy has positive influence on the mentally retarded children with hyperactivity and limited intellectual expression, to help them improve sociality, adapt themselves to school and satisfy their mental demand. The study focuses on the improvisation technique so that it enables a counselee to express his emotions and feelings in a safe and easy manner, which he used to find hard verbally. Besides, therapeutic, educational and entertaining approaches of the free improvisation therapy are employed for the study. A mildly retarded chid(13, female) is taken who has a lot of potential for the effective education and rehabilitation. 18 sessions(once per week, 1 hour) are done and analyzed qualitatively. And the musical note is made from improvisations for each session. The result shows that the free improvisation therapy plays a positive part for the improvement of hyperactivity of mentally retarded children. Especially among a variety of music therapy, the therapy focused on improvisation makes clear the therapeutic effect in special education, which makes this study valuable.
